The public defender heads five offices of attorneys in charge of providing criminal representation
for indigent defendants in the 20th Judicial Circuit, comprising Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry
and Glades counties.
Smith was appointed in Feb. by Gov. Charlie Crist, after Robert Jacobs II died in December.
The public defender makes $153,140 per year and oversees 130 employees and a general
revenue budget of about $7 million.
Brian Boyle was our guest speaker at our July chapter meeting. Ive had the pleasure of
knowing Brian for many years now. He started out his career as an assistant public defender in
1988 after two years as a certified legal intern, and started a private criminal defense practice in
1995. He is an excellent attorney and well respected throughout the Circuit.
Other races on the primary ballot will be Lee County Commission District 1, with incumbent Bob
Janes being challenged by Cape Coral Mayor Eric Fiechthaler and Gerard David Jr. The winner
will face former Cape Coral City councilman A.J. Boyd, with no party affiliation, and Carla
Brooks Johnson, also with no party affiliation, in November.
Lee County Commission District 3 incumbent Ray Judah, is being challenged by Anita
Cereceda. The winner will face Les Cochran, with no party affiliation, Nov. 4.
In the Lee County Commission District 5 race, incumbent Frank Mann is being challenged by
Shawn Seliger. The winner will face Steve Sonny Hass, no party affiliation, and Dick Kuhn, no
party affiliation in November.
Lee County Property Appraiser Ken Wilkinson is being challenged by Kyle Lee. The winner in
this race will face John Glaser, a Democrat, and Larry St. Amand, with no party affiliation, Nov.
4.
Also on the ballot, Republicans will be asked to vote for their State Committeewoman. The
candidates are Brenda Skupny and Marilyn Stout. My vote will always be for Marilyn Stout.
